Take a journey into the enchanted world of magic beans and moonlit nights, towering giants and handsome princes, and fates sealed (and unsealed). Familiar storybook figures such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (with his beanstalk), and Rapunzel cross paths with the childless Baker and The Baker’s Wife on their quest to reverse the Witch’s curse on their fruitless family tree. But as the characters descend deeper into the forest, they find that getting what you wish for doesn’t always end happily ever after. Stephen Sondheim’s witty, powerful score and James Lapine’s imaginative, darkly humorous book combine to make the Tony Award-winning Into the Woods a favorite among musical lovers and a timeless masterpiece.
Broadway Rose’s production is directed by Jessica Wallenfels who says, “I’m excited to direct this show because we are going to render it for the audience in an entirely new way.” Broadway Rose’s imaginative production will use a single piano to anchor the award-wining score (with musical accompaniment from the characters themselves). This unconventional approach is the vision of music director Eric Nordin, who is stripping down the music to its beautiful essence. The larger-than-life characters led costume designer Darrin J. Pufall Purdy to the exaggerated fashion within the 18th Century, with large colorful wigs, fancy frock coats, and oversized pannier dresses. Lace on top of lace on top of lace…with bows on top. Scenic designer Sean O’Skea has created inventive scenery that will turn the New Stage into a dense forest, illuminated by the ever present yet changing moon.
According to Wallenfels, “Into the Woods celebrates the familiar archetypes of fairy tales, just before blowing them up. This musical asks profound questions about humankind, such as, is contentment possible? How does privilege blind us? Are good and evil absolute, or are they only multiple sides of the same story? Ultimately the show explores how a community pulls together in the face of disaster, while examining how our ‘found’ families sustain us when others leave us. Amazingly, Sondheim’s genius manages to pull all of this off through a fireworks display of theatricality, humor and musical virtuosity. Into the Woods allows us to think, feel, laugh and sing.”
