As part of the First Tuesday Art Walk reception, on November 5 from 5-8 p.m., for the continuing exhibition, I Love Oregon, the Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 E. Main St., Hillsboro) invites the community to experience the paintings of local artists Donna Clark, Sandra Pearce, and Donna Sires, each highlighting Oregon’s natural beauty. This event also features performances and activities celebrating Dia de los Muertos. In celebration of the traditional Mexican holiday, an Altar de Muertos will be displayed representing the vision pre-Hispanic cultures had about death. Guests can also enjoy dance and musical performances, paper mask crafting, a bilingual talk detailing the history of the holiday, and more! Inspired by nature and the tranquility of the Northwest, I Love Oregon, exhibits the works of art of Donna Clark, Sandra Pearce, and Donna Sires. The pieces play with elements of atmosphere, luminosity, and refection stimulating feelings of serene calm.
An Altar de Muertos will be constructed and displayed in the Walters lobby by Huehca Omeyocan, a cultural arts organization devoted to celebrating Aztec culture. The basic three levels of an altar are heaven, earth and underworld. Levels go up to as high as seven levels to represent steps needed to get to the Mictlān, or underworld. Elements displayed on this alter represents four elements, earth, wind, fire and water, as wells as the four directions in the universe.
Local guitarist Gabe Ballard will entertain from 5 – 6:30 p.m., followed by a bilingual talk on the philosophical concept of death in Mexico presented by Professor Guillermo Marin Ruiz at 6:30 p.m. Huehca Omeyocan will close the evening with a moving performance of Mexica, Chichimeca, and Aztec dance and music at 7:15 p.m.
The First Tuesday Art Walk is free, open to the public, and takes place on the first Tuesday of every month throughout Downtown Hillsboro from 5 – 8 p.m. Exhibitions at the Walters Cultural Arts Center are open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Walters is located at 527 E. Main St. and is situated on the corner of Northeast Fifth Avenue and East Main Street in a one way grid in downtown Hillsboro. Parking can be accessed from either Fifth or Sixth Avenues, and the Walters is conveniently located just two blocks off the MAX Blue line.
