The Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 E. Main St., Hillsboro) presents Painted Sky Northstar Dance Company on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. Established in 2005, the company performs Native American styles of dance and music, while incorporating the contemporary styles of jazz, lyric, tap, and hip-hop. Comprised of Intertribal and contemporary dancers, Painted Sky Northstar Dance Company celebrates the richly layered traditions of Native American dance with powerful and life-affirming performances full of “energy and talent [that light] up the stage” (OPB).
Dedicated to honoring Native American culture and carrying on Native heritage through traditional and contemporary dance, Painted Sky hopes to educate the public about rich Native traditions while uniting people across all cultures. “Through dance [the performers] share their stories of who they are and where they came from,” states Mary Hager, Founder of Painted Sky Northstar Dance Company. The primary goal of the organization is to present Native American music, song, composition and dance to the greater community, showcasing artistic collaboration between Native and non-Native performers.
