(Hillsboro, Ore.) — On Tuesday, April 2, from 5 – 8 p.m., the Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 E. Main St., Hillsboro) will host an opening reception during First Tuesday Art Walk for “Secret Rainbow,” an exhibition featuring Lynne Taylor, Sue Parman, and Carmen Sonnes. Working in watercolor and mixed media, the artists of “Secret Rainbow” present diverse viewpoints through practices of portraiture, scientific illustration, and the representation of metaphysical or spiritual passage. The exhibition will be on view through May 24, 2019, with a second reception May 7.
Coming to art-making with a range of experiences and backgrounds, Taylor, Parman, and Sonnes find common ground in “Secret Rainbow.” The surrealistic landscapes and prismatic portraiture on display speak to the individual stories each person carries, the masks they wear, and to the hidden dimensions that unfold all around or within. With a background in the sciences, Taylor’s work often illustrates a scientific concept, weaving the micro and macro into complex, surreal compositions. Parman, a writer and anthropologist as well as artist, seeks to tell stories through portraiture, and Sonnes, a self-taught artist born to Mexican immigrants, shares her search for beauty and transcendence through personal narrative. Mysteries linger beneath the surface in the work of these artists, pushing beyond every day experiences.
The April 2 Art Walk reception will feature a demonstration of techniques for painting on Yupo by exhibiting artist Sue Parman from 5 – 6 p.m. During this time, Parman will create portraits of gallery patrons and share material tips and techniques for working with value. Artist Lynne Taylor will lead a “Walk & Talk” through the gallery at 6 p.m. Kyndel Dollison will perform on solo acoustic guitar in the Walters Lobby from 5 – 6:30 p.m., and family art-making activities, including torn-tissue “stained glass” collages, will take place 5:30 – 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided thanks to our supporting sponsor, Decadent Creations.
The First Tuesday Art Walk is free, open to the public, and takes place on the first Tuesday of every month throughout Downtown Hillsboro from 5 – 8 p.m. Exhibitions at the Walters Cultural Arts Center are open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Walters is located at 527 E.
